IS-02: SmartSensors-D - Seamless localization

Developing a seamless tracking functionality both inside and outside of enclosed spaces

The aim of the Smart Sensors D project is to ensure constant remote support independent of location, thus offering more safety to persons in wide variety of situations. This requires a position monitoring function with 100% coverage both indoors and out. The project therefore goes toward meeting the demand to conduct research into overarching position monitoring support for a wide variety of target groups. It will then become easier to locate persons in an emergency (mountaineers, sports persons, children, the chronically sick) and get help to them fast. The use of individual position monitoring technology means that the elderly and disabled can remain in their home surroundings for longer than is currently the case. Nevertheless, they continue to benefit from the best possible safety as appropriate intervention is initiated in case of an emergency.

Persons are located indirectly via the tracking of electronic components. These are either integrated in new types of clothing or the sensors are worn on the body itself. Rough position monitoring and detection of activity is set to be realized by a more far-reaching, new approach to position monitoring which can even work independent of clothing. In this project, user orientation will be given consideration right from the very beginning so that the position monitoring functions can be aligned to user requirements as early as the research stage.

The tracking of people happens by means of a location-dependent, seamless choice of positioning technologies GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which operate at a high interoperability. So a barrier-free commissioning is made possible by the assisted. The localization is based on intelligent power management and a standardized data transfer. Furthermore this can be extended by a vital signs monitoring .

In home range Bluetooth detection is applied by means of a locating infrastructure. The indoor positioning is done via field strength measurement of existing WLAN networks. Here the unique positioning through fingerprinting is possible. By using the globally available satellite navigation system (GPS), an outdoor positioning can be realized .
