Developing an energy-efficient , mobile communications platform to connect sensors to a network infrastructure

Providing gap-free communication channels for medical sensor signals from the sensor to the service center level makes an enormous contribution to increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of health services. The mobile communication platform, which acts as an assistance system for the patient, plays a key role both in this communication channel and in the Smart Sensors projects. It is the place where the signals from a variety of sensors are pooled, pre-processed and made available to the service center.

Example: Support for dementia patients

Care for dementia sufferers requires a lot of attention and is an enormous strain for relatives providing the care. Besides possible tendencies to wander off alone and become confused, multimorbid accompanying effects (risk of falling, cardio-vascular illnesses) may also cause problems. In the event of any irregularity, the assistance system can inform a service center or carers so that they can make verbal contact with the person concerned, give support or, if appropriate, call the emergency services. When such a system is installed, the person concerned and their carers notice that things become considerably easier and the quality of life of all involved improves significantly. Patients can also remain longer in their familiar surroundings, which, in turn, leads to a cost reduction in the health service.
