A-01: Integrated femtosecond laser technology for therapeutic application in corneal surgery

The goal of the project is to set up and conduct research into an ultraviolet femtosecond laser for corneal surgery. With this device, it should then be possible to correct defective vision in the human eye with much greater precision. The technical objective is to develop a laser system with an ultraviolet wavelength of 345 nm. The device will enable tissue ablation for the purpose of refractive correction, a procedure not possible with a sufficient degree of precision using existing methods. This compact laser system will not only eliminate the need to combine various lasers or to combine lasers with mechanical microkeratomes, but will also simplify clinical handling and significantly increase precision and predictability. At the beginning of the project, WaveLight GmbH will implement a laboratory set-up which will constitute the starting point for further development. Within the 24-month duration of the project, WaveLight will then develop and construct the system technology and the software algorithms to activate the treatment system and will push ahead with the development of test constructions and prototypes.
